CHAPTER 18

Paige’s throat went dry and her knees wobbled underneath her as she stared at the beautiful blonde who sashayed her way closer to them, swinging a set of keys on a chain.

Dewey hissed at her before spitting out a tiny burst of flames.

Ivy laughed before she froze, cocking a hip as she studied them. “You two really are idiots.”

“Yeah, but we’re the best library team. And once we find the Scepter, we’ll claim that crown again,” Dewey spat at her.

She rolled her eyes. “You really can’t be this dense. You’re not going to find it. It’s not here.”

“Well, whatever clue is here, we’ll use to find it wherever it is,” Paige said, lifting her chin and putting on a brave front despite quaking inside.

“There is no clue here, moron. It was a wild goose chase, and you fell for it.”

“So, you’re the one who logged the request into the library system.” Paige jabbed a finger at her with a frown.

“Guilty, but only just. I didn’t do the deed myself, I just…prompted someone else to do it.”

“Who?” Paige asked.

“It doesn’t matter. They aren’t a member of our elite little group. They’re just some poor underling who didn’t want to see their daughter die a slow, painful death from a Venompire bite.” She shrugged a shoulder, batting her eyelashes at them.

“You’re sick, lady,” Dewey said with a poke of a claw at her.

She smirked at him, crossing her arms. “I know.”

“I suppose we won’t make it past this room,” Paige said, her gaze darting around the room as she searched for any options that could save them from their impending and likely painful deaths.

“Oh, but you will. We could use a few more allies, you see.”

“I’d never work with you!” Paige shouted.

Dewey didn’t answer. Paige gave him a double-take. “Dewey,” she said through clenched teeth, bobbing her head at Ivy.

“What?” he asked. She nodded toward the Venompire again. “Oh, that. I was still considering it. There are a lot of outstanding questions. What are the terms? Will there be peeled grapes involved?”

“I can’t believe you. You would go to the dark side for peeled grapes?”

“Well…” Paige offered him a stony glare. “You’re right. Principles are principles. Even when they cost you a life with peeled grapes being fed to you by a beautiful blonde goddess.” Dewey heaved a sigh before his features turned angry. He thrust a claw in Ivy’s direction. “I’ll never join you either. You’ll have to kill me here and now.”

“Thanks, buddy. Way to show solidarity.”

“I’d love to. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to watch you writhing in pain on the floor as the poison creeps through your system and slowly sucks the life out of you.”

“Wow, that’s harsh. You could have just said the first part and left the rest off,” Dewey said.

Ivy wrinkled her lips with disdain. “Unfortunately for me, I will not get that pleasure. The High Table has other plans for you. So, you’ll have to come with me.”

“The High Table?” Paige arched an eyebrow before a chuckle escaped her.
